This is a replica of Dave Schmarder's #48 DX Crystal Receiver. The set uses two of Dave's excellent Litz spider coils, Jackson Bros. variable capacitors with ceramic insulators, ceramic mounting pillars to minimize rf losses and a FO215 diode. I love the vintage Murco tuning dials which were a real 'find' on Ebay. They incorporate a planetary slow motion drive mechanism. The set performs superbly. From the south of England I can pull in stations from all of over Europe even with a modest aerial (70 ft). It is housed in a cabinet I made of oak veneerer plywood and wenge to keep the dust out.

John's 2009 Crystal Radio

John Allen's crystal set.

This is my version of the very popular Mystery crystal radio circuit. It uses a beautifully made coil made by Geoff Roberts, good quality variable capacitors and slow motion drives. At Geoff's suggestion I also included a Selectivity Enhancement Circuit. It performs very well indeed. The cabinet is made of cherry wood and the dials and knobs were supplied by Jackson Bros. It's probably the best looking set I've made.
